Van Niekerk meanwhile took to Facebook to remind his fellow citizens that it is important to follow the guidelines set out.
"Let's share, let's help each other, spread hygiene, spread health, and look after one another. So try not to be in crowded spaces, try not to be too close to one another. Find ways to use a handkerchief or direct yourselves away from someone else (when you sneeze)."
The Olympic and World champion says now is the time to just relax, something he says he is very good.
"If you are considering to travel, this is the time to just chill and play Playstation, watch movies, relax and chill. It's what I do best."
Van Nierkerk is confident the country will overcome this pandemic.
