Johannesburg – Farhaan Behardien of the Titans and Hardus Viljoen of the Highveld Lions have both been suspended for one match in the domestic four-day series following the outcome of a Cricket SA disciplinary hearing in terms of the CSA code of conduct.
Behardien will miss the match starting on Thursday between the Titans and the Warriors at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth while Viljoen is not eligible for the Lions' match against the Dolphins at Senwes Park, also starting on Thursday.
Both players pleaded guilty to a charge in terms of clause 6.3.1 (f) that deals with using language that is seriously obscene, offensive or insulting towards another participant, that occurred in the match between the Lions and the Titans that took place at SuperSport Park from November 20 to 23.
CSA disciplinary commissioner Rian Cloete said he had taken into account the fact that both players admitted the offence, and that the language used was in the heat of the moment.
He also noted that both players regretted their behaviour and that they had clean disciplinary records.
“However, having taken all factors into account, it is important that an effective penalty be imposed,” he said.
“Both players are seasoned professional cricketers and Behardien has represented the national team. The joint submission that they did not regard the language used as offensive, seems to be an attempt by both players to evade any possible penalty and one must question the sincerity thereof.
“In the circumstances I am satisfied that the appropriate penalty in respect of this offence, which is a level 2 offence, is a suspension for one four-day match but without the need, in addition, to impose a fine.” – Sapa
