Los Angeles - Singer Sheryl Crow, who dated Lance Armstrong for several years, has commented for the first time about the disgraced cyclist's doping confession, telling the TV show Entertainment Tonight that she “felt bad” for Armstrong and his family.
Crow dated Armstrong from 2003 to 2006, a period which overlapped with Armstrong's doping violations and three of his seven Tour de France victories.
“I know how hard he worked to win those titles, and you know, it was hard to watch,” said Crow, 50, in comments set for broadcast on Tuesday night.
“I felt bad. I felt bad for him, I felt bad for his family and I kind of felt like the rest of America,” said the singer about her experience watching Armstrong's interview last week with Oprah Winfrey. “He is a hero we watched and looked up to.”
Crow added that she now believes that Armstrong has a sense of relief after admitting he used banned substances after vehemently denying such claims for over a decade.
“I think that honesty is always the best bet and that the truth will always set you free,” she said.
“It's got to be really hard walking around, knowing you're not telling the truth about something. I always contend that the truth is the best way to go.” - Sapa-dpa
