Johannesburg - South Africa's cycling champion Daryl Impey on Wednesday took to Twitter to express his disappointment at being snubbed by the SA Sports Awards, when they announced their nominees on Wednesday.
“It's like I said before, Cycling in SA is not a major sport and will never get the recognition it deserves,” Impey said on Twitter.
Impey, who rides for Orica GreenEDGE, made history in July, becoming the first South African and African to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France after stage six.
His team won the fourth stage and Impey led the points standings after the sixth stage of the race. He went on to retain the yellow jersey after the seventh stage.
He also won the silver medal in the men’s team time-trial event at the Road World Championships in Italy in September.
The SA sports awards are aimed at recognising and honouring individuals who had excelled on and off the field.
Cycling SA was nominated alongside the SA Hockey Association and Swimming SA in the Federation of the Year category.
