Johannesburg – Jay Thomson and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio secured the men's and women's national crowns at the South African Road Cycling Championships in Nelspruit at the weekend.
Thomson was first across the line, followed closely by teammate Louis Meintjes, to win the men's road race.
The gold medal for Thomson followed the silver he won in the individual time trial on Thursday behind Daryl Impey, while Meintjes bagged double gold in the Under-23 division after he also won the time trial in his age category.
“There are no words that can describe what it means to be the South African national champion,” Thomson said on Sunday.
“It feels like a weight has been taken off my shoulders. I am really excited about it and can't be happier.”
In the women’s race on Saturday, Moolman Pasio claimed gold, securing her second successive SA title after winning in 2012.
Moolman Pasio also won the women’s time trial on Thursday and said she was thrilled with her performances.
“I'm just ecstatic to have taken double gold this weekend. They are great achievements for me,” Moolman Pasio said on Sunday.
“I'm incredibly happy to wear the SA stripes again in Europe and fly the South African flag high.” – Sapa
