Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi says he would like to see a change in South African football where clubs are open about transfer fees involved when it comes to signing new players.
This was after it was confirmed by TransferRoom that the Tshwane club paid a whopping R63 million to acquire the services of Brazilian forward Arthur Sales from second tier Belgian club Lommel SK.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Mngqithi said he wasn’t a fan of the practice of keeping transfer fees and player salaries secret, adding that he believed in the transparency that’s seen in other countries, and that it would help players not get short changed during their careers.
“I know that sometimes that could cause issues in the change room and all that, but I always say that in football, you have an opportunity.
“In football, your biggest opportunity is when you sign your own contract. You must do the best you can to do what you think you deserve,” Mngqithi said, according to Soccer Laduma.
“In these issues of contracts and monies spent on players, personally, I would not want these things to happen. I would love these to be open to know who is earning what at the club.
“That will also help other players who are cheated somewhere, where you find a PSL player is still earning R5 000 to R10 000. If this is in the public domain, I think every club will compete to be at a certain decent level in terms of the figures,” he added.
