Bafana Bafana keeper Ronwen Williams may have had a night to remember at the Caf Awards in Morocco on Monday, but it just doesn’t make sense that the ace goalkeeper was not included in the African team of the year.
The 32-year-old Williams won Goalkeeper of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year, but somehow didn’t make it into the best XI at the awards.
Instead, Cameroon’s Manchester United keeper Andre Onana was voted into the best XI in Africa.
Since Williams was voted as the best keeper on the continent, how was he then not deserving of a place on the best XI?
The best XI is voted for by players from the continent.
Achraf Hakimi, Kalidou Koulibaly and Chancel Mbemba were the defenders which cracked the nod. In the midfield, Yves Bissouma, Sofyan Amrabat, Franck Kessie and Mohammed Kudus were chosen.
The three forwards picked were Mohamed Salah, Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.
Williams was the star for Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, with his best performance coming in the quarter-final against Cape Verde. As the game moved to a penalty shootout, the Bafana skipper saved four penalties to lead his side to the semi-finals and ultimately the bronze medal.
For Mamelodi Sundowns, Williams led a defence which conceded just 11 goals in 30 games as The Brazilians romped to a seventh league title in a row.
In November, Williams was one of the nominees for the Yashin Trophy for the best goalkeeper in the world at the Ballon d’Or awards in Paris.
Williams was the first South African footballer to be nominated at the Ballon d’Or awards.
