Durban — Several homeowners in Durban have decided to spread the Christmas cheer by decorating their homes with amazing displays of Christmas lights and decorations.

They also used the opportunity to do some fundraising for the less fortunate during the festive period. One of the homeowners Anne Moodie is encouraging people to see their display at Annie’s Busy Beez in Romsey Grove, Durban North.

The gates will be open to the public for a walk around, photos and even a visit from Santa on 24 December from 6:45 pm. Kids can also post their last-minute letters to Santa. Moodie has been doing this for 21 years.

“Do not forget to bring your Christmas Cheer. I started with just two lights and a bell and a Merry Christmas. It has just grown each year. We do not have a particular theme. I just try and make it a children’s wonderland,” Moodie said.

Putting up the lights can take a month. Moodie said preparation is key. They have to check to see that all the lights work accordingly and in tune.

“At first, my husband Gary put the lights up on weekends as he works during the week. Then once there were more and more he could not cope. So now our handyman puts them up,” she said.

Moodie explained that she started the Santa’s Elf house about 4 years ago. Here children can leave their letters to Santa.

“We have to clear the box out every second day. So in that time, I am sure it’s well over a thousand letters. If there are email addresses I (Santa) send a reply email,” Moodie explained.

In Somerset Park, uMhlanga, the Munsami family created the Durban North Pole experience. The Munsami family home has become popular with its elaborate display of lights for the festive season. The brightly coloured display of lights included snowmen and reindeer.

Homeowner Vasu Munsami also celebrates his birthday on December 26. The family had the light display since 2006. Both families also have a cash collection box with the proceeds going to worthy causes.
