THE Times of Eswatini, the oldest newspaper in the country, has officially undergone a change in ownership, marking a pivotal moment in its 128-year journey.

This transition ushers in a new chapter in the media landscape of Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland.

News of the sale emerged late Tuesday, igniting widespread discussions and speculation throughout the nation. By Wednesday, numerous reports surfaced, analysing the potential implications of this ownership change and what it could signify for the publication’s future.

Social media was abuzz with reactions as many speculated about the identity of the new owner. Businessman Michelo Shakantu was often mentioned as the likely buyer. However, the Times of Eswatini promptly issued an official statement to clarify the situation.

Management of the Times of Eswatini addressed the matter, stating: “The Times of Eswatini confirms that there has been a change in the ownership structure of the company. The transfer process is still in progress. As this unfolds, it is crucial to clarify that while the new shareholder has an interest in certain entities within Inyatsi Group Holdings, this does not mean that the Times of Eswatini has been acquired by Inyatsi Group Holdings.

"Despite the ongoing changes, the Times of Eswatini remains an independent media outlet dedicated to delivering fair, accurate, and responsible journalism. Our editorial policies and journalistic integrity remain intact, and we will continue to uphold the highest standards of reporting,” it said.

This reassurance was intended to alleviate concerns about possible shifts in editorial direction and maintain public trust in the newspaper’s commitment to impartiality and quality journalism.

Within the newsroom, employees expressed a blend of curiosity and cautious optimism about the future. Speaking anonymously, one reporter shared: “We are eager to see what changes will be made and how they will impact us.”

Another reporter expressed her excitement about the upcoming changes: “Change brings new opportunities, but one must have an open mind to seize them.”

As the transition progresses, many in the media industry are closely monitoring how these changes may affect the broader journalistic landscape in Eswatini. Industry experts believe that new ownership could introduce fresh perspectives and innovative methods of news delivery, potentially enhancing the publication’s reach and impact.

Some industry commentators argue that the new ownership could provide an opportunity for the Times of Eswatini to modernise its operations, embrace digital advancements, and broaden its readership. As global media consumption trends increasingly lean towards online platforms, the publication may seek to innovate by enhancing its digital presence and utilizing multimedia content.

While ownership changes often raise concerns about editorial influence, the Times of Eswatini’s firm commitment to maintaining journalistic integrity reassures many.

A senior journalist at the publication remarked: “We understand our readers’ concerns and want to reaffirm that our duty is to serve the public with truth and fairness. Our independence remains our greatest asset.”

As the Times of Eswatini navigates this crucial moment in its history, it exemplifies the resilience and adaptability of media institutions in a rapidly evolving world. Its commitment to core values while embracing new opportunities will be vital in securing continued success and relevance in the years ahead.

The path forward will be closely observed by many, including journalists, readers, business leaders, and policymakers. The impact of the new ownership on the publication remains to be seen, but there is a prevailing hope that the paper will continue to serve as Eswatini's leading source of news and analysis.

With careful stewardship and a focus on excellence, the Times of Eswatini is well-positioned to uphold its legacy of informing, educating, and inspiring its audience for generations to come.
