Let's face it, not much happens in the Eastern Cape. Besides having some of the most picturesque scenery in the country, the province is largely quiet and laid back throughout the year - its flagship festival is the stellar Grahamstown National Arts Festival after all.
However, December and January are slightly livelier. Here are a few of the standout festivals over the coming weeks:
New Years Festival of Lights
This festival is also known as The New Year’s Eve Lantern parade. The festival extends an invitation to people from all religions and ethnic backgrounds and aims to build unity within the community.
Festival-goers will have the opportunity to make their own lanterns on the evening at one of the available workshops, before parading for through Nieu-Bethesda. It sounds like a serene, magical experience.

Countdown Music Festival 2017
There are few bigger, more epic parties than those thrown on New Year's Eve. The Countdown Music Festival looks like one of those epic experiences that those in attendance will be talking about weeks after.
It's also focused on providing a platform for local content, as their page reads, "Countdown Music Festival is a musical celebration meant to showcase the talent of the Eastern Cape whilst ensuring that national artists who have established themselves and their brands, participate to ensure that quality music is experienced by festival goers and more so, the artists of the EC Province are elevated onto the national stage."
