Travel not only opens your eyes to the world out there, it also teaches you some valuable lessons. Here are 8 lessons that will make your next trip a memorable one:
You meet amazing people
There is something about travel that gives you the courage to start conversations with strangers, be it on the flight, the tour or at the hotel you are staying at. You get to meet some incredible people, ones that will stay your friends even though you live worlds apart. I met a Malaysian couple when I visited Asia two years ago. I asked them to take a picture of me near a beach and they obliged. We later spoke and found out so much about each other. We still keep in contact and hope to meet on one of our next travel adventures.
A smile can change everything
A smile at a local can change everything. Try it and see for yourself.
Stress never makes anything better
Stress can ruin a perfect trip. Many travellers stress about transport, accommodation and their budget. While it's great to be cautious and plan ahead, it's also important to enjoy every second in a particular country. As long as you follow the safety guidelines, there should be no reason for anyone to not enjoy their holiday.
Solo travel is fun
Some of the best travel memories are made on a solo adventure. You are on your own and you can explore to your heart’s desire. Having been on a solo trip myself, I can truly say that it has been one of the most incredible moments of my life. You learn to stand on your own, can make friends easily and follow your own schedule. Whether you want to tour at 6am or sleep in, the choice is up to you.
Bad things happen
Not everything is going to work out according to plan and that is okay. Bad things like theft, scams and other negative incidents can happen, but it is up to you to decide whether you going to let it get to you or whether you going to carry on enjoying the trip. Some things cannot be avoided, but always be vigilant enough to stop what you can.
You learn to appreciate your country
No matter where I travel in the world, I still love South Africa. Travel taught me to appreciate my country, the people and the culture. As the saying goes: “There is no place like home…”
It's okay to deviate from your planned schedule
Be spontaneous when you travel, even if that means you have to deviate from your planned itinerary. One bold move could be the best thing that could happen to you on your travel adventure.
Locals are willing to share some insight. You just have to ask
Befriend the locals as they can guide you to some really cool travel spots in that particular country. All you need is to ask and they will be more than happy to help. When I broke my glasses in Phuket, a local I befriended a few weeks before helped fixed it. Her assistance made the rest of my trip so much easier.
