Travelling with children is no easy task. There’s a lot to consider to ensure that both parents and children have an enjoyable time abroad.
To help families find the best holiday spots, Go2Africa conducted a study analysing 365,969 family-friendly hotels, attractions, and restaurants in Africa.
Using this data, they identified which countries have the highest percentage of highly-rated, family-friendly places to eat, sleep, and enjoy.
Seychelles
The island nation of Seychelles is ranked as the best country in the world to visit with kids. It boasts the highest proportion of family-friendly hotels, attractions, and restaurants compared to non-family-friendly places, cementing it as a top destination for parents.
Numerous bays in Seychelles are shielded by offshore reefs, offering protection from the open sea and creating shallow waters ideal for children. It’s also incredibly safe, with no vaccination requirements, no dangerous animals, and no natural disasters.
Morocco
Morocco, which ranks second, might seem like an unlikely choice, but its cities, souks, and the Sahara offer uniquely diverse experiences for both kids and parents. Families can explore historic medinas in Marrakech, Fes, and Chefchaouen, where children can enjoy colourful markets, intricate architecture, and lively street performances.
Visiting ancient Roman ruins like Volubilis, as well as stunning palaces and gardens, provides a fascinating glimpse into Morocco’s rich history and heritage.
South Africa
South Africa is the third best family holiday destination in Africa, offering everything from action-packed cities, beautiful beaches, and relaxing resorts to Big 5 safari parks like Kruger National Park.
South Africa has a well-developed tourism infrastructure and is considered safe for family travel, with plenty of amenities and services catering to the needs of families with children. Whether enjoying vibrant cities like Cape Town, relaxing on stunning beaches, or safaris, a South African holiday provides a diverse and memorable trip for families.
Namibia
Coming in fourth place, Namibia is an excellent destination for families seeking adventure and unique experiences. Families can experience a safari in Etosha National Park, home to rare wildlife including elephants, lions, and giraffes, or explore the wetlands of the Caprivi Strip.
Many accommodations in Namibia offer kid-friendly programmes, swimming pools, numerous activities, and interactive conservation experiences. The country is safe and most regions are malaria-free, making it ideal for family travel.
Liesel Van Zyl, a travel expert at Go2Africa, offers insight into why choosing a country for families can be so difficult:
“Safaris provide an immersive way to learn about diverse ecosystems, conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting endangered species. The guided tours, led by knowledgeable local experts, offer engaging stories and facts that captivate young minds, making the learning process both fun and impactful.”
Many safari lodges and camps are specifically tailored towards families, with accommodations and activities designed specifically for children, ensuring their safety and comfort.
