Those visiting Marekele National Park are in for a treat when they visit this summer as many of the park’s cheetah’s are resurfacing. In celebration of International Cheetah Day today, Marekele National Park issued a statement about the recent influx of cheetah sightings during game drives.

The reason is due to a recent fire that swept through nearly half of the park and took firefighters 12 days to extinguish. While this has been a blow to the park, they are glad that the cheetahs are visible during drives. The 70 000 hectares park is home to the big 5 and regular sighting of cheetah has added much more to visitors’ experience.

The park manager at Marakele National Park, Mphadeni Nthangeni, said, “The fire was a huge blow for us because it took days to put it out. On the other hand fire as a management tool enhances biodiversity by reducing bush encroachment and enabling other plant species like the protea to blossom.”

The national park is situated about 12km outside of Thabazimbi, Limpopo.
