Just a short drive from Cape Town, this area offers ziplining, hiking, off-road trails, and river cruises. Whether you're after an adrenaline rush or a break from routine, the Bergrivier region has something to explore.

Here are some of the adventures that are on offer in the region.

Ziplining with a view

At Piekenierskloof Mountain Lodge, ziplining offers a fast-paced way to take in the landscape. The course features multiple lines, each longer than the last, with platforms set high above the valley. It’s a quick, exciting way to experience the region from above.

A walk through history

Piketberg’s historic walking route takes visitors past well-preserved buildings, churches, and landmarks. This self-guided tour provides insight into the town’s past, with the Piketberg Museum offering more details on local heritage.

Hiking the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness

The Groot Winterhoek Wilderness is a top hiking destination, featuring rugged trails through rock formations and fynbos. Some routes lead to clear pools, offering a refreshing stop along the way. For a more comfortable stay, Highlands Eco Estate on Piketberg Mountain offers accommodation in a peceful natural setting.

Birdwatching along the Berg River

The Bergrivier estuary, a globally recognised Ramsar site, is home to over 250 bird species, including flamingos and African Fish Eagles. Birdwatching spots such as Bokkom Laan and Rocherpan Nature Reserve attract enthusiasts looking for a quiet, rewarding experience.

Exploring the Berg River

Boat cruises along the Berg River allow visitors to take in the scenery at a relaxed pace. Options range from group tours to private sunset trips. Kayak rentals are also available for those who prefer to explore on their own.

Camping and off-road trails

Daniels Hoogte Private Reserve in Aurora offers a different kind of camping experience, with the option to stay in a cave. The area’s trails are ideal for hiking, with rock art sites adding historical interest.

For 4x4 drivers, Klein Tafelberg offers a 15km trail with technical sections that test skill and endurance. A nearby hiking route winds through caves and rugged terrain, adding to the adventure.

Bergrivier is a destination for travellers who want more than just a scenic escape.

Whether on land, water, or high above the ground, the region offers activities that make the most of its diverse landscapes.
