The Eiffel Tower, which attracts close to 7 million visitors annually, has been facing financial challenges.
According to the Paris Municipality, pandemic-induced tourism slump dealt a significant blow to its revenue streams and delays in maintenance and maintenance costs have surged.
This has resulted in a 20% increase in ticket prices to cover the ongoing maintenance costs of the 135-year-old structure.
Effective from August 1, 2024, visitors now pay €35 (approximately R678) to ascend the Eiffel Tower, up from the previous fee of €29,10 (about R564).
Commenting on this, Antionette Turner, General Manager at Flight Centre South Africa said that while the price increase might seem steep, it’s important to remember that the Eiffel Tower is more than just a tourist attraction – it’s a piece of living history that requires constant care and upkeep.
She said that despite the fee increase, the agency doesn’t anticipate a significant drop in interest from South African travellers.
“Paris remains a dream destination for many, and the Eiffel Tower is often at the top of their must-see list. The experience of standing atop this iconic structure and taking in the panoramic views of Paris is truly priceless,” she said.
Though ticket prices have increased, there are other ways to still enjoy Paris and the Eiffel Tower.
Budget-conscious travellers will be pleased to know that the price increase applies to tickets that include elevator access to the top and visitors can opt for cheaper tickets that only go to the second floor or even choose to climb the stairs for a more adventurous and budget-friendly experience.
However, for those seeking panoramic views of Paris without the hefty price tag of the Eiffel Tower, there are several excellent alternatives.
Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur Basilica
The Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur of Montmartre is the Shrine of Perpetual Adoration and divine Mercy, dedicated to Jesus' sacred Heart.
It is a unique place where people prayed day and night, continuously, for almost 140 years now.
You can enjoy views of Paris for free from the steps of the Sacré-Cœur.
Galeries Lafayette Rooftop Terrace
Galeries Lafayette has long enjoyed strong links with the worlds of fashion and contemporary design.
The Haussmann department store regularly hosts prestigious events, showcasing key designers of the moment as well as introducing its customers to artists whose work has endured the test of time.
This department store’s rooftop provides a fantastic view of the city, including the Eiffel Tower, and is free.
Arc de Triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces.
Under its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the First World War.
While entry costs €13, it’s less than half the price of the Eiffel Tower and offers spectacular views down the Champs-Élysées and beyond.
Montparnasse Tower
At 689 feet tall, the monolithic Tour Montparnasse, an office skyscraper in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, is as imposing today as when it was completed in 1973.
There is an old joke in Paris that the top of Montparnasse Tower has the prettiest view in the French capital.
Slightly pricier at €18, it is still more affordable than the Eiffel Tower, with the added bonus of having the Eiffel Tower in your panoramic view.
Parc de Belleville
The Parc de Belleville, one of the parks and gardens of the 20th arrondissement of Paris, is situated between the Parc des Buttes Chaumont and the Père Lachaise Cemetery.
This park in the 20th arrondissement offers one of the best free views of Paris.
Printemps Department Store Rooftop
On the Boulevard Haussmann side of Paris, Perruche is a cocktail bar and restaurant with a breathtaking view of the capital.
The 500m² venue, perched on the rooftop of the Printemps de l'Homme-Printemps du Goût department store, offers a panoramic view over the rooftops of Paris and immerses visitors in a green atmosphere with its many exotic plants.
It’s another free option with great views of the Eiffel Tower and the Paris skyline.
“These alternatives not only offer breathtaking views but also provide unique perspectives of Paris that many tourists miss,” explained Turner.
